If your Mac is acting slow, apps take forever to start or don't start at all this tip might be for you. Before you start trashing stuff to make space, install antivirus software, call an IT wiz or even worse... completely re-install your Mac, have a look at your Fonts.

Open up the Font Book application, select all fonts with Command-A and choose "Validate Fonts" from the File menu. Font Book will now scan all fonts for potential issues or serious problems and report them back to you. If it finds any serious problems, select those fonts and remove them. Be sure not to remove any System fonts. Empty your trash, restart your Mac and see if a bad font was the problem. If the Finder tells you the trash can't be emptied because a font is in use just try again after the restart.

If you use a lot of fonts consider using a Font Manager.
The best we know of is FontExplorer and they describe perfectly why it's beneficial to use it: "Every font that has been activated on your system requires the deployment of system resources to applications. This can be an unproductive use of resources, particularly for fonts that are used infrequently. Font management allows you to activate fonts solely for the period of time you actually need them, freeing up precious resources so your system can run more efficiently."
