Replacing the traditional spinning hard drive with an SSD will noticeably improve the speed of your Mac regardless of age. While expensive several years ago the prices have really come down a lot making it a worth while upgrade. You want your OS and most used applications to reside on the SSD for fast access but for storage of files a traditional hard drive may be better. In other words, don't break the bank buying the biggest SSD you can find, get one that can fit your OS and user folder. Downloads, Movies, Music, long term storage, those can all reside on a traditional hard drive internally or externally.
